Zhangjiajie

The Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is a unique national forest park located in Hunan Province in the south of China. Even if it in 1982 it was recognized as China's first national forest park it has not become very popular until the film “Avatar” showed landscapes inspired in Zhangjiajie.

The most notable geographic features of the park are the pillar-like formations that are seen throughout the park, the result of many years of erosion. Much of the erosion which forms these pillars is the result of expanding ice in the winter and the plants which grow on them. These formations are a distinct hallmark of Chinese landscape, and can be found in many ancient Chinese paintings.

One of the park's quartz-sandstone pillars, the “Southern Sky Column”, had been officially renamed "Avatar Hallelujah Mountain" in honor of the film “Avatar” in January 2010.
Especially in this area, tourists are mostly Chinese people, so it is difficult to find western people. As a result, we have taken pictures with lots of Chinese people that probably had never seen a western face. After this trip, I am in the pictures of half of the Chinese population.




El Parque Natural de Zhangjiajie se encuentra situado en la provincial de Hunan, al sur de China. Ha sido el primer lugar denominado Parque Natural en China, pero no es tan conocido como otros. Últimamente, desde que se ha estrenado “Avatar” se ha hecho más popular ya que los paisajes de la película se inspiran en Zhangjiajie.

La característica de este parque es la curiosa forma que tienen las montañas, en forma de pilares de roca con muy pocos árboles. Este tipo de paisaje no se encuentra solo aquí sino que hay otros lugares de China que tienen un paisaje parecido, aunque no tan espectacular ni tan extenso.

Hace poco se ha cambiado el nombre de una de las montañas del parque a “Avatar Hallelujah Mountain”, en honor a la película. Desde entonces el turismo se ha multiplicado, aunque la mayoría son turistas chinos. No os podéis imaginar cuántas fotos nos hemos sacado con chinos que se acercaban a pedirnos una foto. Seguramente nunca habían visto en la realidad una cara occidental y les llamábamos mucho la atención.
